Harris Effect - My Attempts

At first, I quickly attempted to get an idea of making a Harris Effect photo in photoshop, using photos form my Time lapse/stop motion & my Light painting. I then had a dedicated photoshoot for this effect. In this i took photos of a candle and its flame and also the smoke after the candle is blown out. I created three final images.

Harris Effect

The Harris effect was created by Robert Harris of Kodak. It creates a photo through three different exposures each one using either a red, green or a blue filter. When these photos are put together the parts of the photo that remain the same will come out in full colour whereas the parts of the photo that have moved will come out in the three separate colours. I am going to attempt to recreate this effect.

Light Painting

I did some light painting to experiment with some styles of photography and to get some experience with some interesting ideas. I used torches being thrown in the air and spun around on a string to get some interesting effects, I also tried running around with it and illuminating different areas and different times although these effects didn't work as well. I edited the best ones in photoshop to bring out the colour and crop to a more suitable size and i also tied putting them in black and white which I think worked reasonably well.

Pinhole Camera Position

This is the view that my long exposure should capture with the sun rising over the tree in the background.

Making the pinhole camera

I started by removing the lid from the can. I then cut out a circular top from card and made a light proof lid with the use of gaffer tape. After creating the lightproof lid, I put a pinhole in the side and made a shutter cover with electrical tape.

Stop Motion

For my stop motion, I intended to make an image of a floating person wearing shoes that continually changed colour. To do this, the model had to jump many times and after each shot i needed to spray slightly more of the wellington boot. I used four different colours and then repeated these colours in a different order to create a random looking effect. I intended to keep the camera still and take the photo from the same position.

I was quite inspired by this video by blu and the way the paint changes and grows.

I think that it worked quite well although the clouds came out at some point which made the some of photos darker than I was hoping and although I didn't plan on the position of the camera changing I think it adds to the composition.

Pinhole Camera - Shots and Ideas

These are some pictures of existing pinhole cameras that I can draw inspiration from for my my 6 month pinhole exposure and an example of a pinhole camera in a discreet place. I am going to capture the movement of the sun over the exposure, this means that the camera will have to face south.

Multiple Exposure

For my experimentation, I chose to make some Multiple Exposures using photoshop. As fallen leaves have quite a striking colour and texture I thought that they would make a good thing for one of the part of a multiple exposure. I also took some photos around Lincoln and used them for the rest of the photos. For my final photos I used a photo of a swan and one of Lincoln Cathedral.
